How would you explain your research in 3 sentences to someone who is not in science?

Retinal degeneration is a progressive degeneration of retina that causes visual impairment in patients of macular degeneration and retinitis pigmentosa. Stem cells can be used to treat such diseases as they have been shown to differentiate into a variety of retinal cell types.

About your work

My PhD thesis is based on testing the Neuroprotective potential of bone marrow derived stem cells in a glaucoma mouse model. We are inducing neuronal cell death in mouse retina by NMDA based excitotoxicity. It will be interesting to investigate the stem cell migration to the area of degeneration. It will facilitate potential therapeutic interventions for retinal degeneration patients especially of Glaucoma.
